Calculus is the math of rates of change, the engine behind epidemic curves, drug doses, engine design, and climate projections. Its big trick is telling apart a level from how fast that level is moving, and humans are terrible at this. In Economics, 'inflation is falling' still means prices rise, just slower, and people confuse the slowdown with prices actually dropping. Psychology shows we feel the derivative too: joy and grief track the rate our fortunes change, which is why nothing good or bad stays felt for long. And in Environment, CO2 fills the sky like a bathtub, so even if emissions stop rising the level keeps climbing, a distinction our intuition almost never gets right.
