Dispute Resolution & Restorative Justice
Also known as dispute settlement, conflict resolution, alternative dispute resolution, mediation and arbitration
Courts and prison are just one way to handle wrongdoing - you can also sit people down with a neutral mediator, use a private judge (arbitration), or run a restorative circle where the person who caused harm faces the one they hurt and tries to repair it. That echoes many faith traditions (Faith and the Moral Life, Religion), which prize forgiveness and making amends over pure payback. It fits how healing actually works (Mental Health, Health): victims often recover more from being truly heard than from a harsh sentence. And it mirrors nature (Evolution, Science), where cooperating and repairing bonds, not just fighting, helps groups survive.

When a modern court sits a criminal down to face their victim, confess, apologize, and earn their way back in, it's running a script religions wrote thousands of years ago. Confession, atonement, forgiveness, welcome back, that's ancient church technology. Secular law just borrowed the machinery of forgiveness that faiths spent millennia perfecting.
