e-RUPI works similarly to a prepaid voucher in that it can be redeemed at participating retailers without the use of a card, digital payments app, or internet banking. This is an end-to-end digital transaction that eliminates the need for a physical card or voucher and saves money. The National Payments Corporation of India developed e-RUPI, a digital payment method (NPCI).
The beneficiary of e-RUPI does not need to have a bank account, which is a significant difference from other existing digital payment systems. Another important feature of e-RUPI is that it is compatible with non-smartphones, allowing it to be used by people who do not have smartphones or in places where internet access is unavailable. It will be provided to the user through SMS (for those without a smartphone) or QR Code (for those who do have a smartphone) (for smartphone users). A beneficiary will be asked to show the merchant the QR code or SMS message, which will be scanned and a verification code issued to the beneficiary through text message. In order for the transaction to be completed, the latter must share the code with the merchant. This allows for digital payments to be conducted between digital senders and digital receivers, as well as between digital senders and offline receivers.
