AI & Writing
Natural language generation
Also known as text generation, NLG, natural language text generation
When a machine can produce smooth, fluent text on command, it throws open old questions: who counts as the author, what makes writing authentic, and what words are even worth. This collides with law, where rules on ownership and credit lag behind a tool that can outrun them. It is a live debate in philosophy about how our tools quietly reshape the way we think and who we are. And it worries media, since a flood of cheap, convincing text makes it far harder to tell real information from the fake.

Find your direction
Compare the choices that shape this path. There is no score or single right answer.
-
Will you dive deep into the technical side of AI, or master the art of guiding it with language?
One path is about building the engine, the other is about being a master driver.
-
Do you want to use AI for practical, everyday communication, or for exploring the boundaries of creative expression?
This choice often determines the industries you'll work in and the kind of impact you'll aim for.
-
Will you primarily be a user of existing AI tools, or a critical voice shaping the conversation around them?
Both paths are crucial for the field, but one is about doing, the other is about thinking and guiding.

Glossary
- Artificial Intelligence (AI)Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is when computers are programmed to do tasks that usually need human intelligence, like understanding language, solving problems, or learning from experience. For example, when your phone suggests the next word as you type a message, that's AI at work.
- Bias (in AI)Bias in AI happens when an AI system shows unfair preferences or prejudices, often because the data it learned from contained existing human biases. For example, if an AI trained mostly on stories about male doctors, it might unfairly suggest male pronouns when asked to write about a doctor.
- Creativity (AI vs. Human)Creativity is the ability to imagine or invent something new and valuable. While AI can generate novel content based on patterns, human creativity often involves deeper understanding, emotion, and personal intent. For example, a human artist might create a painting to express a personal struggle, while an AI might generate a similar image based on patterns it learned.
- Generative AIGenerative AI is a special type of AI that can create new things, like stories, images, music, or even computer code, instead of just analyzing existing information. For example, using a generative AI tool to write a poem or design a new character for a game.
- GenreA genre is a category or type of art, literature, or music that shares similar styles, themes, or forms. For example, in literature, fantasy, science fiction, and mystery are all different genres of books.
- Large Language Model (LLM)A Large Language Model, or LLM, is a very advanced type of AI that has learned from huge amounts of text data, allowing it to understand, generate, and translate human language. For example, popular AI chatbots like ChatGPT are powered by large language models that let them answer questions and write essays.
- OriginalityOriginality is the quality of being new, fresh, and unique, meaning it's not copied or based directly on something else. For example, a story with a completely new plot and characters that no one has ever thought of before shows great originality.
- PlagiarismPlagiarism is the act of presenting someone else's work, ideas, or words as your own without giving them proper credit. For example, copying a paragraph from a website into your essay without citing the source is plagiarism.
- PromptA prompt is the instructions or questions you give to an AI tool to tell it exactly what you want it to create or do. For example, typing "Write a short story about a talking cat who solves mysteries" is a prompt for an AI writing tool.
- Style (in writing)Style in writing refers to the unique way a writer uses words, sentences, and literary devices to express ideas, which gives their writing a distinct feel or voice. For example, a writer might have a very formal style with long sentences, while another might use a casual style with short, punchy phrases.
- Text GenerationText generation is the process where an AI system creates new written content, such as articles, stories, or summaries, based on the instructions it receives. For example, an AI tool performing text generation might write a news report about a school event after being given a few key facts.
Threads 3
Where this connects to other fields, and why it's worth knowing.
- AI & Technology Regulation Law
Copyright law was built on one assumption: a human wrote it. AI that writes poems and stories breaks that assumption in half. Now judges have to decide brand-new questions, like whether a machine's words can even be owned, and whether feeding it thousands of books to learn from counts as stealing.
- Philosophy of Technology Philosophy
Plato griped that writing would wreck people's memories and hand them fake wisdom instead of real understanding. That's word-for-word the panic we now aim at AI. The fear that 'this new tech will ruin our minds' is at least 2,400 years old, which should make us pause before repeating it.
- Misinformation & Disinformation Media
When a machine can spit out endless smooth, human-sounding text for free, lying becomes basically costless: you can flood the internet with fakes in seconds. So the thing that suddenly gets rare and precious isn't information, it's trust. Once anyone can fake anything, knowing who to believe becomes the whole game.
