Environmental Engineering
Environmental engineering designs systems to reduce pollution and protect water, air, and land. It combines contaminant measurement with treatment design, operating constraints, and environmental requirements. Drawing on chemistry, biology, and hydraulics, the discipline develops solutions for wastewater management, air pollution control, and waste disposal to improve public health and safeguard ecosystems. Its practitioners design municipal water systems, evaluate hazardous waste, and assess the environmental impact of new construction, addressing issues from acid rain to global warming. The field applies scientific principles to maintain the environment and enhance the quality of human life.

Emerging roles
-
Environmental engineer — PFAS treatment systems
Emerging application area: PFAS treatment research compares activated carbon, ion exchange and membrane approaches. Investigate which contaminants a process removes, how performance is measured and how concentrated waste is handled. This is an application to investigate, not a forecast of job vacancies.
