The digital SAT explained: format, scoring and how to prepare from India

6 min read

If you are preparing for the SAT from India, what will you actually do on screen, and what must you arrange before reaching the centre? Preparation means learning how the test works and checking the booking, device and identity requirements. The rules below come from College Board sources checked on 2 October 2026. Check dates and availability again when you book.

Two sections, four modules

The standard SAT has two sections: Reading and Writing, then Math. College Board's How the SAT Is Structured table gives Reading and Writing “64 (two 32-minute modules)” with 54 questions, and Math “70 (two 35-minute modules)” with 44. Together, that is 98 questions and 134 minutes, or 2 hours 14 minutes, of testing.

Its What to Expect on Test Day page says students have “one 10-minute break” between sections. Allow extra time for this break and check-in. Approved accommodations may change these standard timings.

Reading and Writing covers “Craft and Structure, Information and Ideas, Standard English Conventions, and Expression of Ideas”, according to its section page. The Math overview lists Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry and Trigonometry. It specifies “multiple-choice and student-produced response questions”: you supply some answers instead of selecting them.

How adaptation and scoring work

Adaptation happens between modules within each section. College Board's adaptive-testing explanation says the second module's questions “depend on how you performed on the first module.” The test sets the difficulty mix for the next module, rather than changing it after every answer.

You can return to questions and change answers in the current module until time runs out. The test-day page says: “Once you've moved on from a module, you cannot go back to it.” Review your answers before leaving that module.

The What Do My Scores Mean? table gives a total score range of 400 to 1600. Each section ranges from 200 to 800. Score Structure defines the total as “the sum of the two section scores”. This is not a percentage of answers correct. How Are Scores Calculated? explains that “two students who answer the same number of questions correctly in a test section may earn differing section scores”. Question characteristics and difficulty matter.

College Board gives clear advice: “Remember: there’s no penalty for guessing. It’s better to answer every question”.

Prepare Bluebook and your device

College Board's SAT Weekend page states: “Students taking the SAT on the weekend will test with Bluebook.” Prepare your device and download the app early. It says: “5 days before test day, complete exam setup and get your admission ticket.” Complete exam setup as a separate step after registration. If you will use a device lent at the centre, check the setup instructions for that arrangement.

The Approved Devices page lists a “Windows or Mac device, an iPad, or a school-managed Chromebook.” It also says: “You cannot run Bluebook on a personal Chromebook or mobile phone.” Check current operating-system and storage requirements before choosing your device.

If you cannot get a suitable device, request one from College Board after registering. SAT Device Lending says: “Complete your request at least 30 days before your test day”. It cautions that “Submitting a request does not guarantee” a device.

For Math, the calculator policy allows an “approved handheld calculator” or the “Desmos calculator embedded in Bluebook.” For handheld models, it says: “Only non-CAS (computer algebra system) calculators are allowed.” Check the current policy before choosing one.

Check dates and seats in India

Check the current College Board dates and deadlines page before planning or booking. When checked on 2 October 2026, its table listed the test on 7 November 2026. It gave 23 October as the registration deadline and 27 October for changes, regular cancellation and late registration. The table row reads: “Nov. 7, 2026 Oct. 23, 2026 Register Oct. 27, 2026”; “Register” is the link text between the dates.

These dates also apply internationally. If you need to borrow a device from College Board, register and request it at least 30 days before test day, ahead of the registration deadline. The page specifies: “SAT Weekend deadlines expire at 11:59 p.m. ET, U.S.” That means U.S. Eastern Time, not Indian local midnight.

Use SAT Test Center Search to find Indian locations. College Board's Registering page says not all test centres have seats available. Check availability during registration and consider several locations. A centre listing does not reserve a seat. The Policies for International Testing table states for India: “Sunday testing isn't available.” This refers to the Sunday option for students who cannot test on Saturdays for religious reasons.

Read the India identity rules

Before test day, read the full, current India subsection of SAT ID Requirements. It accepts “a valid passport (with your name, photograph, and signature)” among the listed documents. It also specifies: “Only the letter and PVC Card forms of Aadhaar ID are valid.” For Aadhaar, the page lists the valid PVC card with name and photograph. It also accepts the original government-issued Aadhaar letter. Printouts, copies, screenshots and e-cards are unacceptable. Check that the legal name on your ID matches your admission ticket, as the general checklist requires.

Have your admission ticket ready. Fully charge your device, install Bluebook and complete exam setup. What to Bring on SAT Test Day specifies “Your fully charged testing device” and says of photo ID: “This must be a physical document, not electronic.”

Arrange accommodations early

To register with accommodations, Registering with Accommodations says “you must get College Board approval before you register.” If the deadline is approaching and you are waiting for approval, it says: “Register as a standard test taker.” If approval arrives, contact SSD to check whether accommodations can be added for your test.

The SSD dates page explains that “the approval process can take up to seven weeks”. Check its current documentation deadline for your chosen test date as well as the ordinary SAT registration deadline. Review can take longer if you need to provide additional documentation or resubmit it.

Using Accommodations states: “All accommodations must be approved by SSD.” For approved extended time, it provides the “approved amount of extended time within the digital test” and says students “will also receive extra breaks.” Check the current chart for your approved arrangement. An accommodation may work differently in the digital test and in the classroom.

Build preparation around official practice

College Board's practice page says: “Find a test preview and official full-length practice tests on the Bluebook app.” Its downloadable paper tests are nonadaptive. Use Bluebook practice to experience the digital adaptive format.

A suggested preparation routine is to take a Bluebook practice test, review weaker skills, work on those skills and practise again. The Student Question Bank lets you filter by assessment, section, “domain, skill, and difficulty level”. Official SAT Prep on Khan Academy, developed with College Board, is free. College Board describes its levels as “Foundations, Medium, and Advanced.” Use targeted questions and lessons alongside full tests.

What to do next

Turn preparation into a practical plan. Check the current test date and seat availability, sort out your device and ID, and start any accommodation request early. Then use practice to decide which skills need attention.

For broader learning alongside exam preparation, Learnacy Mentorship offers One Young India's interdisciplinary mentorship for learners in Grades 8 to 12 and undergraduates. It runs primarily online as an ongoing programme guided by its mentor network.
