Grades 8 to 10: what actually matters for admissions abroad, marks included

The short answer

Class 10 marks travel further than many expect. Some US universities ask for official Class X board results, and UK universities such as Nottingham and Warwick read Class X marks in place of GCSEs. That makes a Class 10 subject choice, such as Basic or Standard Maths, matter years later. Grade 8 marks appear on none of the university pages we read, so Grade 8 is the year to build foundations; Class 9 feeds the Class X results universities read.

Facts checked on 30 October 2026 against the sources below.

How this was made: drafted with AI help from the sources listed, and checked by the One Young India editorial desk on 30 October 2026.

Which early marks do universities abroad actually see?

Class 10 board results, more often than Grade 8 or Grade 9 report cards. UMass Amherst wants official CBSE, CISCE or state-board Standard X results from applicants who are still at school (UMass Amherst). Pepperdine asks for CBSE or CISCE Standard X results and treats them as covering years 9 and 10 (Pepperdine).

MIT’s transcript requirement covers three years of grades plus external exam results, and it names CBSE among those exams (MIT). Our piece on how US and UK universities read Indian marks explains why the selective US universities we checked read them as issued, without a GPA conversion.

None of the university pages we read asks for Grade 8 marks. That is a reason to use Grade 8 well, not to ignore it.

Why can Class 10 marks matter for a UK degree?

Because UK universities can treat Class X as the GCSE stage. Some UK courses ask for GCSE grades in named subjects, such as Maths, and their India pages say which Class X mark meets them.

Three UK universities whose India pages say how they read Class X, checked on 29 October 2026.

UniversityHow it reads Class X
NottinghamEquivalent to GCSE. For CBSE or CISCE, 90% counts as an A, 80% as a B and 70% as a C (Nottingham)
Warwick88% for a GCSE 7, 85% for a 6 and 80% for a 4. For a GCSE 8, Class X is generally not accepted and the subject must be taken in Class XII. English cannot be met with Class X at all (Warwick)
EdinburghIn arts, humanities and social sciences, a GCSE-level required subject can be met in Standard X or XII (Edinburgh)

So a weak Class X mark in one subject can count against a UK course years later, unless the university also considers that subject from Class XII, as Edinburgh’s arts, humanities and social sciences college does. The fix is cheap in Class 9: take the subject seriously while it is still a foundation.

Does Basic or Standard Maths in Class 10 matter?

For some UK courses, yes. Warwick says that where a course asks for GCSE Maths at grade B or 6 and above, only Class X Standard Maths counts; Basic Maths is not considered (Warwick).

Basic Maths in Class 10 can count against a UK application. A student who might apply to the UK for economics, sciences or business should check the maths line on a few course pages before choosing.

The same care applies after Class 10. Three Warwick departments (Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistics) turn down CBSE Applied Mathematics in Class XII (Warwick). Our guide to choosing a stream after Class 10 covers the wider choice.

What do admissions offices say they look for beyond marks?

Academic strength first. Yale says its first and most important consideration is academic potential, and that it also looks for applicants who support others and who explore new horizons with curiosity and creativity (Yale).

Depth over volume. Turning the Tide, a 2016 report issued with a broad coalition of college admissions offices, recommends valuing the quality of activities over their quantity, and sustained community service. It is a set of recommendations, not a rule any university must follow (Making Caring Common).

Family counts. The same report recommends that admissions offices value contributions to one’s family, such as caring for younger siblings or major household duties (Making Caring Common). Common App lists family responsibilities among the activities a student can report (Common App).

What are Grades 8 and 9 for?

Foundations that the later marks rest on. The Class X results universities read build on Class 9, so the subjects that feed a likely degree deserve steady attention now, not a sprint before the boards.

Reading beyond the textbook. It builds the curiosity Yale describes, and later it gives a student something real to write about.

One or two activities kept up over years. A later activities list holds up to ten entries, and Common App’s advice is to choose the activities that tell a student’s story best, not to chase the number (Common App). Our note on which extracurriculars actually matter goes further.

For students on Indian boards

CBSE now runs two Class 10 board exams. From the 2026 examinations, the first exam, from mid-February, is compulsory. A student who passes may sit a second exam in May to improve up to three subjects out of Science, Mathematics, Social Science and languages. Both exams cover the full year’s syllabus, and internal assessment happens only once (CBSE).

CBSE’s notification planned first-exam results for April and second-exam results for June (CBSE). In 2026, the first year, the second-exam results came out on 18 July (CBSE, 18 July 2026). CBSE built the 2026 final result from the better of the two attempts (CBSE, 18 July 2026).

CBSE’s notification says the passing document is issued to all students after the second-exam results (CBSE). Our explainer on how CBSE’s two Class 10 exams work has the details.

State boards can need higher Class X marks. Nottingham asks students from state boards other than Maharashtra and West Bengal for 95% where CBSE and CISCE students need 90% for a GCSE A, and 85% where they need 80% for a B (Nottingham).

Common questions

Do Class 9 marks matter for US universities?

Only as far as a university’s own document rules reach. Pepperdine treats Standard X results as covering years 9 and 10, and MIT asks for three years of grades. Read each university’s international page.

Standard or Basic Maths for a UK degree?

Standard Maths keeps more doors open. Warwick counts only Class X Standard Maths where a course asks for GCSE Maths at grade 6 and above.

Does CBSE’s second Class 10 exam help with applications abroad?

It can raise up to three subjects, and in 2026 CBSE built the final result from the better of the two attempts. For a student who passes, every other subject stands on the first exam, so aim to do your best in it.
