More than half of rural Indian teenagers cannot do basic division

ASER 2023 found that 56.7% of rural Indian youth aged 14-18 could not solve a 3-digit-by-1-digit division problem, a skill expected by Std III or IV. These are not children who lack ability. They are children who were taught that maths is a test of innate talent, not a skill to build.

Mueller and Dweck’s six studies showed that children praised for intelligence, "you must be smart at this", later avoided challenges, performed worse after failure, and described ability as fixed. Those praised for effort persisted longer, enjoyed challenges, and saw ability as improvable. The difference was not in the child. It was in the story they were told.

Maths anxiety is learned, not inherited

Parents who fear maths pass that fear to their children, not through genes, but through homework. Maloney and colleagues found that when maths-anxious parents frequently helped with maths homework, their children learned less maths over the school year and became more anxious themselves. When those same parents helped less often, the link vanished. The issue was not the parent’s ability. It was the way their anxiety turned every problem into a verdict on the child’s potential.

A parent who says, "I was never good at maths either," is not comforting the child. They are teaching them to quit.

Struggle means the teaching missed the child

Most children who fall behind in maths are not lacking talent. They are missing foundational skills. A child who cannot divide may never have mastered multiplication. A child who struggles with fractions may not understand place value. These gaps turn every new lesson into a wall.

J-PAL and Pratham’s six randomised evaluations across seven Indian states showed that "Teaching at the Right Level", grouping children by current ability rather than age, raised test scores by up to 0.7 standard deviations. The lowest-performing children improved the most. Struggle is not a sign of inability. It is a sign that the teaching has not met the child where they are.

Mathematical ability is not fixed

Stanford professor Jo Boaler argues there is "no such thing as a maths person." Brain plasticity means nearly everyone can learn maths to high levels, apart from a small number with severe learning differences. The belief that maths is a gift some people have and others lack is a myth, and myths can be unlearned.

A child who "can’t do maths" today can master algebra next year if taught in a way that builds on what they know. The gap is not in the child. It is in the assumption that struggle means inability.

A single lesson can change a child’s path

A 45-minute online growth-mindset lesson raised grades among lower-achieving students and increased enrollment in advanced maths courses in a nationally representative U.S. study. The effect held only where the environment reinforced the message. A growth mindset is not a magic trick. It is a belief that must be supported by action.

For parents, this means replacing "you can do this" with "we will figure this out together" and "mistakes are part of learning." These words do not require maths expertise. They require a shift in the story.

How parents talk about maths shapes what children believe

The belief that maths ability is fixed is a story we tell children. It is not a fact about them. The same child who struggles today can thrive tomorrow if the story changes.

Parents cannot control the school system or the curriculum. But they can control the words they use, the messages they reinforce, and the space they create for learning. The myth of "not a maths person" starts at home. So does the truth: that with effort, good teaching, and belief, every child can learn.
