Carbon dioxide is a very small part of air—about 0.03% in many textbook descriptions, which means roughly 3 parts out of every 10,000 parts of air. Yet this tiny gas is powerful: plants use it for photosynthesis, and it traps heat as a greenhouse gas.

Structure of the Atmosphere: Five Layers

From the Earth's surface upward, the atmosphere is divided into five layers: troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and exosphere. There are no sharp boundaries between them; each layer gradually merges into the next.

The troposphere is the lowest layer and contains most of the air and water vapour. All weather phenomena—clouds, rain, storms—happen here. Temperature normally decreases as we go higher in this layer.

The stratosphere lies above the troposphere and contains the ozone layer, which absorbs harmful ultraviolet radiation from the Sun. Because of this absorption, temperature increases with height in the stratosphere. Jet aircraft often fly in this layer to avoid weather disturbances. Above it, the mesosphere is the layer where most meteors burn up on entering the Earth's atmosphere.

The thermosphere has very thin air but very high temperatures; it is also where the ionosphere helps reflect radio waves for communication. The exosphere is the outermost layer, where air is extremely rare and gradually fades into space.

Weather, Climate, and the Greenhouse Effect

Weather is the condition of the atmosphere at a particular place and time—whether it is sunny, cloudy, rainy, windy, hot, or cold. Climate is the average weather of a place over a long period, usually 30 years. For example, today's rain is weather; the fact that a region receives heavy rain every monsoon is climate.

The atmosphere works like a greenhouse. Sunlight passes through it and warms the Earth. The Earth then radiates heat back, but gases like carbon dioxide and water vapour trap some of this heat. This natural process is called the greenhouse effect. Without it, Earth's average temperature would be about -18°C instead of the comfortable 15°C we experience.

However, human activities such as burning coal, oil, and forests are adding extra carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. This is strengthening the greenhouse effect and causing global warming, which is why the balance of gases in the atmosphere matters so much.

Why the Atmosphere Is Essential for Life

The atmosphere supplies the oxygen animals need to breathe and the carbon dioxide plants need to make food. Nitrogen, though not used directly by most organisms, is an essential part of proteins and is cycled through the atmosphere by bacteria. The atmosphere also transports water vapour from oceans to land, completing the water cycle.

Without the atmosphere, there would be no wind, no clouds, no rain, and no sound, because sound needs air to travel. Daytime temperatures would be scorching and nights freezing. The atmosphere is therefore not just a topic in geography; it is the reason life exists on Earth.
