Recalling beats even "active" study techniques

In a 2011 Science study, students who practiced retrieval by freely recalling a science text outperformed those who studied by creating concept maps, even when the final test required building a concept map. The retrieval group had not practiced mapping, yet they scored higher. Retrieval forces the brain to reconstruct knowledge from scratch, making it more durable and transferable than even the most "active" study techniques.

Despite this, students overwhelmingly default to cramming because spacing feels slower.

Replace rereading with these three strategies

Close the book and write down everything you remember. Use flashcards, practice questions, or blank sheets of paper, anything that forces recall without the crutch of the page. Space these sessions out over days or weeks. A comprehensive review of 10 common study techniques rated practice testing and distributed practice as the most effective, while rereading and highlighting were rated among the least effective. The methods that feel hardest are the ones that work.
