Ecosystem Tipping Points
Also known as Ecological tipping point, Regime shift, Climate tipping points
Ecosystems can absorb stress for a long time and then suddenly flip to a completely different state, like a rainforest drying into grassland or a coral reef crumbling to rubble, and often there is no going back. Spotting when a system nears the edge is the job of Mathematics' modelling and simulation, running the future forward to see where it snaps. The pattern echoes Politics, where a stressed democracy can decay past a point of no return, and Economics, where a rattled economy can tip into a full-blown downturn. It even shows up in Health, where a stressed gut microbiome can flip from helpful to harmful.

- 1980Since the 1980s, this is being threatened by the increase in sea surface temperatures which is triggering mass bleaching of coral, especially in sub-tropical regions.
- 2016Since then, estimates for global warming thresholds have generally fallen, with some thought to be possible in the Paris Agreement range (1.5–2 °C (2.7–3.6 °F)) by 2016.
