An infectious disease is a numbers game: a germ jumps into a person, copies itself, and spreads to others faster than we can stop it, sometimes evolving to dodge our drugs. Crowds speed it up, which is why dense cities are both engines of life and tinderboxes for outbreaks (Urbanisation & City Life).
