Religious conflict
Also known as religious wars / communal violence
When a struggle over land or power gets wrapped in faith, it turns into a holy cause people won't bargain over — because you can't split the difference on something sacred. This links to Politics and its fights over contested ground where religion, territory, and outside powers all tangle together. It draws on Psychology's social side, which shows how group loyalty hardens into us-versus-them. And it puzzles Economics, since people ignore the "rational" cost-benefit math the moment a fight feels sacred.

Plenty of so-called holy wars are really fights over land, water, and power wearing a religious mask. Faith supplies the fiery story that gets crowds to rally and risk their lives. But underneath the sacred talk, the actual prize is usually very physical territory.

Offer someone cash to give up a sacred claim, like a holy homeland, and they get angrier, not calmer. Money insults the thing they hold sacred, so a fat payout can actually blow up a peace deal. It's the exact opposite of the textbook idea that everyone has a price.

In one experiment, scientists split strangers into teams by a coin flip and people instantly favored their own random team. That's how little it takes to make us pick 'us' over 'them.'
