Speech disappears the instant you say it, so turning it into marks that last was a genuine invention, one humans pulled off only a few separate times in history. The look of each script, whether letters or characters, still shapes how easily people learn to read, which links it to the arts through typography and the design of clear letters. It sits at the root of history too, since the first cities and states needed writing to keep records, and religions spread partly because sacred words could be written down. It even connects to technology, where the same idea of coding speech into symbols underlies how computers store text.

In the 1920s Turkey's leader Ataturk swapped the country's Arabic letters for Latin ones, almost overnight. Just like that, every kid could read the new signs, but nobody could read grandma's old books anymore. Changing the alphabet quietly cut a whole nation off from its own past, on purpose.
